BEGINNING AUGUST 2025
Small group tutoring sessions using the Take Flight curriculum, featured below, will begin in August 2025. Designed for students entering 2nd or 3rd grade in the Huntsville/Madison County area. These sessions are ideal for children who have a dyslexia diagnosis or show dyslexic tendencies. Each group will include no more than 4–5 students to ensure personalized support. Sessions will be held Monday through Thursday, with each session lasting one hour. The program is best suited for students reading at a 1st or 2nd grade level.

TAKE FLIGHT CURRICULUM
This evidence-based program incorporates multisensory teaching techniques, current learning theories, and discovery teaching, which are all supported by research.
Addresses the Five Essential
Components of Reading Instruction
Phonemic Awareness integrated into daily lessons. This is a phonics based program. Students begin reading words for accuracy and automaticity within the first few days. Fluency practice is integrated into the program. Vocabulary development and the implementation of reading comprehension strategies are also integrated into the daily lesson.

ALPHABET SKILLS
Recognition, sequencing, alphabetizing practice
DECODING
Looking at letters and translating them into speech sounds. Links all the letters and sounds in English. 44 sounds, 26 letters, 69 letter clusters
FLUENCY
Repeated accurate practice, instant words, timed readings for rate, repeated readings for smoothness
PHONEMIC AWARENESS
Increases sensitivity to how we make the sounds. Develops ability to separate, blend and manipulate sounds in words.
SPELLING
Links the 44 sounds in English with the letter or letters that represent those sounds. Direct Instruction in: spelling generalizations, spelling rules.
COMPREHENSION SKILLS
Building word knowledge, previewing, predicting, identifying important information, developing self-correcting strategies
Where did we get this program?
The curriculum was developed by the staff at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and represents the latest generation of their renowned Dyslexia Training Program. Building on its proven success, the curriculum is grounded in extensive research and is supported by comprehensive training provided through the Shelton School (www.shelton.org) and Evaluation Center in Dallas, Texas—the largest school in the world dedicated to students with learning differences.
The program is accredited by both the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), ensuring it meets the highest standards for dyslexia education. Additionally, it has been carefully reviewed and supported by local education authorities, further affirming its quality and effectiveness.
